I am a collector of words

Words feed me, free me, comfort, uplift and heal me. I've been saving my favorites in books, handwritten over the years and thought that perhaps in sharing them, not only am I preserving them for myself, but perhaps others may also find healing in them as I have.

Uconditional Positive Regard

Developed by Dr. Carl Rogers

Sitting in silence and accepting everything the person says without judgment or interpretation.

"Before a session I take a moment to remember my humanity.   There is no experience that this man has that I cannot share with him, no fear that I cannot understand, no suffering that I cannot care about, because I too am human.   No matter how deep his wound, he does not need to be ashamed in front of me.  I too am vulnerable.  And because of this, I am enough.   Whatever his story, he no longer needs to be alone with it.   This is what will allow his healing to begin."

Change

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."  Carl Rogers

Experience

"Experience is, for me, the highest authority. The touchstone of validity is my own experience. No other person's ideas, and none of my own ideas, are as authoritative as my experience. It is to experience that I must return again and again, to discover a closer approximation to truth as it is in the process of becoming in me." -Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person

Life

"Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone."   Carl Rogers
